Inside the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries of America, many settlers and colonists were taken captive by the Native Americans, commonly known as Indians. The Natives had many reasons and motives for taking the settlers or colonists. Captives had been often taken to be exchanged, ransomed, or " implemented, ” which usually Native Americans do to replace tribe members who passed or who had been slain. Two very famous captivity narratives will be those of Adam Smith and Mary Rowlandson, whose testimonies are very diverse due to their captors, gender, and religion. David Smith was 18 years old when he was captured by the Indians simply miles previously mentioned Bedford. Jones was captured by 3 Indians, 1 was a Canasatauga and the two others had been Delawares.
