 Fear At Its Finest... Composition

In the short story Wherever Have You Eliminated Charming Billy, Tim O' Brien, looks at a turmoil with the key character Paul Berlin great internal fear of dying. The storyplot takes place about 1965-1973 during the Vietnam Warfare. It is Paul's first day at the conflict and this individual has been fighting his anxiousness. He has seen one of the twenty-six soldiers in his platoon die of the heart attack due to tripping a mine explosive device. Many military continuously tell Paul in order to get used to the fear of the new world however he's not able to undertake it. Paul had not been able to end giggling so when remembering the death of poor Billy he considers to himself " when later poor Billy Young man stepped for the mine, and just how it produced a tiny little sound-poof- and exactly how Billy Youngster stood there with his oral cavity wide open, searching …where his foot have been blown away. ” Later on Billy received scared to death, which can be ironic because he is allegedly " difficult as fingernails or toenails. ” Paul Berlin is unable to forget the fatality of poor Billy and soon this individual begins to chuckle about the complete situation in order to hide his fears. Paul wants to produce his daddy proud and so he treats the fatality as a laugh however he is terribly frightened and hails from the fear of dying just like Billy. Due to death of poor Billy, Paul is unable to forget, from beginning to end the fear of what could affect him. Paul is a Non-public First Class enthusiast wishing for the war to be over and wishing he were home with his friends and family camping. Following realizing Paul may under no circumstances be able to get used to the anxiousness of fear he considered to himself " … protected by three-thousand miles of ocean, and in addition they would swim… and smell salt, and in addition they would be safe. ” In the end a fellow soldier picked him up after practically getting him self killed by simply laughing and blowing his cover he thinks " but even if he smelled salt … he cannot stop being scared. ” Paul had no chance of avoiding his feeling of dread and wanted that was different.
